Evaluation

For the success of the P2V project it is very important to understand the existing physical setup. In this phase Miutec engineers will work with internal IT staff and users to identify daily usage, business processes and limitations of the existing environment. Customer site system, storage and Network admins would be all part of this assessment phase. Third-party tools would be used for capacity planning at no cost to the customer. The idea is to improve the end-user experience through virtualization and also to avoid any negative changes, such as a drop in performance, to the end user. The process may typically take anywhere between 5 to 7 days depending on the size of the existing setup.

At the end of this process suitable users/groups will be identified for virtualization. Server, storage and network capacity planning will be done and customer will be informed regarding any new hardware requirements. A preliminary design would be submitted for customer's approval.

  • What is Virtualization

    Today’s computers are used to run a single operating system and are mostly designed for a single application. Thus modern hardware on these machines is vastly underutilized. A look at CPU and memory usage would show that the local resources are mostly idle. With Virtualization it is possible to run multiple virtual machines on a single physical machine thereby fully utilizing the local CPU, Memory and Storage. A different way to look at it would be the decoupling of user data, application and the operating system from the underlying hardware. Consolidation, central management and mobility are other key features of virtualization.

    Unlike Terminal services where common physical resources are shared by multiple clients, with virtual PC each machine gets its own CPU, memory, storage and network controller. Each virtual machine contains a complete system that runs its own operating system and applications just like a “real” computer. The virtual machine monitor or “hypervisor” that runs on the physical host allocates hardware resources dynamically and transparently. It also maintains a layer of isolation between the virtual machines.

  • Benefits of Virtual Desktop Infrastructure in the financial Industry

Moving a single computer with 4 LCDs from one desk to another can take hours and can involve up to 4 people (in a union environment). A virtual infrastructure allows the user to sit at any desk and access his virtual PC whereby eliminating the need for manual move of user hardware, what we would like to call free seating.
    • Centrally managed Virtual desktops give IT better control, more security and manageability at a lower operational cost. Teleworkers and temporary workers have remote access without sacrificing performance or security.
    • Using Linked clones, hundreds or even thousands of virtual PCs can be deployed using a single parent copy. Software updates and patches applied to the parent virtual machine are automatically pushed to all the linked clones thereby eliminating the need to manually update every clone.

    Analysis/Design
    At the completion of the assessment process, Miutec would come up with a design using best practices and by selecting product features to suit the customer needs. Capacity planning with room for growth, load balancing for optimum performance, redundancy and business continuity would be some of the other important design features. The finished design is shared with the customer for approval and any change requests are made prior to the implementation. Miutec would recommended and help procure software licenses and all necessary hardware.

    Implementation
    Following the design phase a “proof of concept” would be setup at the customer site to test the viability and performance of the proposed design. VDI server infrastructure would be setup to include user profiles and persona. Storage arrays and networks switches would be connected to the new virtual infrastructure servers and tested for performance. Various golden images (base images) would be configured and assigned to user groups. Finally phase would involve user and their data migration to the virtual infrastructure.
